The International RuleML Symposium
RuleML-2007
Rule Interchange and Applications
Orlando, Florida
http://2007.ruleml.org/
Co-located with:
The 10th International
Business Rules Forum
http://www.businessrulesforum.com/
In Co-operation with: ECCAI, IEEE Computer TCAAS
Co-located with the 10th International Business Rules Forum, the International Symposium on Rule Interchange and Applications (RuleML-2007) is the first symposium devoted to work on practical distributed rule technologies and rule-based applications which need language standards for rules operating in the context of, e.g., the Semantic Web, Intelligent Multi-Agent Systems, Event-Driven Architectures and Service-Oriented Computing Applications. After a series of successful RuleML workshops and then conferences (e.g. http://2006.ruleml.org), this is a new kind of event where the Web Logic community joins the established, practically oriented Forum of the Business Rules community (http://www.businessrulesforum.com) to help cross-fertilizing between Web and Business Logic technology.
The goal of RuleML-2007 is to bring together rule system providers, representatives of, and participants in, rule standardization efforts (e.g., RuleML, RIF, PRR, CL, SBVR) and open source rules communities (e.g., jBoss Rules , Jess, Prova, OO jDrew, Mandarax, XSB, XQuery), practitioners and technical experts, developers, users, and researchers. They will be offered an exciting venue to exchange new ideas, practical developments and experiences on issues related to the engineering, management, integration, interoperation and interchange of rules in open distributed environments such as the Web.
A particular focus will be on practical issues such as technical contributions and show case demonstrations of effective, practical, deployable rule-based technologies, rule interchange formats and applications as well as discussions of lessons learned that have to be taken into account when employing rule-based technologies in distributed, (partially) open, heterogeneous environments. We also welcome theoretical contributions that help to build an effective, practical, and deployable rule standard, improve rule technology, provide better understanding of the integration and interchange of rules, and make the current generation of rule engines and rule technology more usable for advanced Web and Service Oriented Architectures.
RuleML-2007 Challenge
To place emphasis on the practical use of rule technologies in distributed Web-based
environments there will be a RuleML-2007 Challenge with a focus on rule interoperation
and interchange. The challenge offers participants the chance to demonstrate their
commercial and open source tools, use cases, and applications. Prizes will be awarded
to the two best applications. All accepted demos will be presented in a highly
publicized Challenge Session, first sequentially for the RuleML-2007 plenary, and
then in more detail on demand. The two award-winning ones will be presented in
special time slots. Intentionally, this year's challenge does not define a specific
task, data set, application domain, or technology to be used because the potential
applicability of rules is very broad.

Conference background and goals
The IADIS CELDA 2007 conference aims to address the main issues concerned with
evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital
age. There have been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have
affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing
at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms
such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative
approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such
as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agents systems. These developments have
created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aims
to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments.
Main tracks have been identified. However innovative contributions that do not
easily fit into these areas will also be considered as long as they are directly
related to the overall theme of the conference ? cognition and exploratory learning
in the digital age.

European
ICT standardisation policy at a crossroads: A new direction for global success
EC, Brussels
We would like to inform you of an open high-level conference ‘European ICT standardisation policy at a crossroads: A new direction for global success’ that is being held by the European Commission in Brussels on 12th of February. The aim of this conference is to find possible political improvements to the European ICT standardisation system and discuss issues relating to the future of European ICT standardisation policy. Vice-president of the European Commission responsible for Enterprise and Industry, Günter Verheugen, will deliver the keynote speech.
Background to the conference
The European standardisation system aims to balance industrial requirements
with society’s expectations and to provide public authorities with the standards
they need to help them implement legislation in support of agreed policies. However,
there are concerns that the European ICT standardisation policy could not respond
to these expectations to the degree required. The European Commission therefore
launched a study on "The specific policy needs for ICT standardisation”
to analyse the current state of European ICT standardisation policy and to present
recommendations for its future development. This study led to a set of series of
recommendations on EU policy, such as improving dialogue with stakeholders, better
integration of consortia and fora specifications in the EU standardisation system
and improving procurement. First discussions on the results of the study including
its recommendations for a new policy direction have been held with a number of
key stakeholders. Given the critical importance of an efficient European ICT standardisation
policy, the European Commission is holding this open meeting in Brussels to present
and discuss the study recommendations more widely with all interested parties.

WiOpt 2008
6th International Symposium on Modelling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and
Wireless Networks
Berlin, Germany
Sponsored by ICST; IEEE IT; ACM; IFIP WG6.3
The design of wireless networks offers challenges not present in fixed networks: both the offered traffic and the network capacity depend on the mobility of the nodes. The designs should not only be functioning correctly, they are also expected to optimize the performance with respect to many criteria, such as energy efficiency, quality of service, and capacity utilization. This symposium intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working on optimization of wireless network design and operations. It welcomes different perspectives, including performance analysis, protocol design, wireless communication, and optimization theory. Contributions to this conference should improve the state-of-the-art in design, analysis, dimensioning and operations of wireless network by providing insights into theoretical aspects as well as providing practical methods and tools. All forms of wireless networks are of interest: from cellular wide-area and local-area networks to dense and sparse ad-hoc networks; domain specific vehicular, public-transport and personal-area networks as well as application-specific sensor networks.
